One of my favorite cooking methods is over an open fire, Today I decided to make an apple pie in my dutch oven!
Here is the finished pie!
I used to do alot of cooking over a fire, It really isn't all that hard, it just takes a little longer and it is alot hotter!
but, the food comes out wonderful and has a better taste than it does from a conventional oven.
For baking I use a three footed dutch oven and get a good fire going, once I have enough coals I then pull the coals from the fire and place them on a pile on the ground where the dutch oven sits and then put coals on top the lid.
I elevate the food I am baking on a wire frame to get a good air flow around it.
for this pie it took about an hour to bake and came out tasting perfect!

That is amazing! So the pie is in a pie pan, inside of that pot, sitting on a wire rack? And then you put the coals on top and wa la? And it turns out that good? That is awesome and makes me want some apple pie!
You are such a true homesteader!!
Now that is too kewl. What a great way to bake in the summer and not heat the house. I need to remember this!

How neat! I'll have to try baking that way :) Just found your blog and really love it!
That's neat! I will have to give that a try when we go camping in Sept. But first, I will need to find a dutch oven.
Oh MY..I am catching up here....I have had such a craving for apple pie lately..I think it started after I watched an episode of Unwrapped and they featured America's favorite foods. I think I need to bake a pie now....yours looks yummy!

Your pie looks wonderful!! Great job!
I have always wanted to bake over a fire using my dutch oven. I haven't tried it yet, but now I'm inspired to try. Do you have to keep adding more hot coals durring the baking process, or just let it go on it's own?
